AGRICULTURE

The Incas were incredibly innovative when it came to agriculture, and it was very important in their society. Most of the population were farmers, and the Inca always had more than enough food to go around, they even had store houses to extra hold food. One technique that was used for farming is called "terrace farming", and the Inca developed this system in order to utilize the sloped land of the mountains for the growing of crops. Essentially, large terraced platforms were built into the mountainside, which created flat surfaces perfect for farming. Each one was contained by stone walls fitted with stairs to provide easier access between terraces. The irrigation system was built through the agricultural terraces, providing ample water for crops. The Inca grew a large number of crops, some examples include potatoes, chilli peppers and tomatoes. The access to an abundant food supply is key for the stability of a nation, and the Inca created this by coming together and organizing an efficient method of farming.
