GOVERNMENT

The Inca had a very strong central government, which was key in the running of the empire. To begin, there was a main leader called the Sapa Inca who was in charge of running the empire, and he resided in the capital city of Cusco. Next, the land was divided into four various regions that intersected at Cusco, and each one was run by a different governor. The four sections together were called Tawantinsuyu and each of the individual regions were called Chinchasuyu, Callasuyu, Kuntisuyu and Antisuyu. Within each larger section there were smaller provinces which also had their own leaders. Furthermore, the government was very generous to the people, providing citizens with all necessities such as food, tools, materials and clothing when needed. For example, young couples were given a home and land to be able to farm, and elders got food and clothing provided after their lives of work. There was no official code of laws, however punishments did exist which acted as a deterrent to bad behaviour, which in turn resulted in very little crime. The existence of such a strong government that functioned well was extremely important for the stability, uniting and organization of their society.
